Designer Chris Benz is one of the darlings of the New York fashion scene–loved by critics and customers alike. But he didn’t get there overnight. And his path might surprise you.
The job he describes as his “favorite and most important” in his career?
Waiter. “In high school I waited tables at this fancy café called Café Nola that was started by the former pastry chefs from Spago, on Bainbridge Island in Seattle, and it was always chock full of the Seattle glitteratti and visiting celebrities (loads of movies were always being filmed on Bainbridge, strangely),” Benz says. “It really taught me how to deal with the idiosyncracies of the public and with difficult people. I always say it was my favorite and most important job in my career!”

Benz is part of our star lineup for our second “How I’m Making It” panel on May 9–that’s less than a week away now. The series profiles up-and-coming fashion pioneers as they climb the industry ranks and it’s a must-attend event for anyone looking to break into fashion. Panelists–including Gayle Dizon, who produces runway shows for Proenza Schouler and Thakoon; Cindy Krupp, whose PR firm reps United Bamboo, Rachel Comey and Lover; and Katherine Krause and Skye Parrott who started Dossier Journal–are all ready to dish out the hard-earned lessons they’ve learned to become succesful in fashion.
In December, we hosted our first How I’m Making It panel discussion, which was such a success we’re bringing it back. The latest installment of “How I’m Making It: What It Takes To Succeed In Fashion” will take place on May 9, 2011 from 7pm-8.30pm in the Cantor Film Center at NYU. Again, this session’s panelists are:
  • Chris Benz (Fashion designer and Fashionista columnist!)
  • Gayle Dizon (Dizon Inc.,runway producer for Proenza Schouler, Thakoon, and Isaac Mizrahi)
  • Cindy Krupp (Krupp Group, public relations for brands like Rachel Comey, Chris Benz, Lover)
  • Katherine Krause (Editor of Dossier Magazine)
  • Skye Parrott (Photographer and Creative Director of Dossier Magazine)

Moderated by us–Fashionista editors Lauren Sherman and Leah Chernikoff–we’ll be asking these rising fashion stars how they broke into the business, and how they’re making it now. There will also be an audience Q&A, so we can pretty much guarantee your questions will be answered. (As long as it’s not, you know, super weird or inappropriate.)
