I’ve been looking at the Gucci Camila T-Strap Sandals all day, and I’ve decided that I approve of the design’s limited use of fur. What cripples most furry shoes is that the material is the main course instead of just a side dish, and this spare usage solves that problem while still providing an unexpected and fun bit of texture.
In almost all cases, I think that fur-covered shoes and handbags look entirely silly and more than a little fashion-victim-y. That’s not to say that the look can’t be worked, of course, but it just usually isn’t. Most fur accessories are too puffy and shapeless to do a design any justice, and most designer seem to be unable to figure out a course of action with the material that doesn’t involve entirely covering whatever it is they’re trying to make.
Another thing this design does well is that it doesn’t get too “boudoir.” We all know those fuzzy marabou-accented shoes that they sell in Frederick’s of Hollywood, and no one wants to spend nearly a thousand dollars on a pair of those. Keeping the fur short, tonal and up around the ankle ensures that these gucci shoes don’t go the way of fancy bedroom slippers, and the spare structure and modern shape don’t compete with the fur so much as compliment it. If you’re inclined to buy fur, this is the kind of design you should go for.
