Sonam Kapoor attended Shruti Merchant’s Taj Express Musical Premiere, which took place on Sunday at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.
Her accessories included a red Prada clutch, black christian louboutins patent pumps, a Cartier watch and Sunita A Kapoor stud earrings.

The L’Oreal ambassador wore The Row Pre-Fall 2011.An ivory semi-sheer blouse with an embellished Peter Pan collar was teamed with black wide-legged pants.Whilst I love the blouse, I would’ve liked to have seen her tapered pants.
Sonam Kapoor needs no introduction to the movie- buff and the fashion conscious. Sonam has emerged as the new style icon, and noted as the best dressed among all young actors of today. All leading magazines have carried Sonam’s image on their covers – the hottest dresser no doubt.
With plenty of spunk Sonam has managed to become a style diva and an actress who can hold her own in front of formidable co-stars. She mixes designer, high street and vintage into unique looks ranging from eclectically edgy to super-sexy. Here you have Sonam Kapoor’s Top Five Designers
Anamika Khanna
• Sabyasachi and Tarun Tahiliani
• Anuradha Vakil
• John Galliano
• Karl Lagerfeld
Establishing her position as the style icon of today’s woman, curvaceous Sonam Kapoor graced People’s magazine cover in a sexy black dress, looking extremely hot and sensuous & won the title of best dressed Indian actress in spite of the other strong and tough contenders.
At the Elle Breast Cancer Awareness do in Mumbai a fortnight ago, actor Sonam Kapoor made an appearance in an abbreviated baby pink Christian Dior gown, looking every bit the prima donna she’s aiming to become. At the Lakme Fashion Week the bubbly actress turned up in a chic purple hounds tooth dress by Marc Jacobs, her hair permed to add a carelessly stylish touch.
Ever since her debut last year, Sonam Kapoor the 5’ 9” beauty has featured on almost all the covers of leading fashion magazines, walked the ramp for designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Anamika Khanna, for whom she is now the brand ambassador and has been impeccably turned out in Lanvin and Stella Mc Cartney for significant social outings.
Her long legs, shapely frame, charming face and a million dollar smile makes even the most casual outfit look exceptional. Sonam loves to play with her image and knows how to match what, whether it is her David Brooke vintage dress from Frock, New York, a green plaid Chantilly lace dress, Chanel dress or Yves Saint Laurent blue and black dress along with Jimmy Choo skin bag and unique shoes; she is a self proclaimed fashion slave and blames her dad for spoiling her.
Labeled as India’s Best Dressed woman, Sonam not surprisingly is L’Oreal’s brand ambassador. She has featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s special edition Asia Class of 2009. And before you start ‘Googling’ her stylist, let it be known that Sonam is her own stylist. Fashion is art to her. If you look closely at her choice of accessories and make-up she mixes vintage pieces with current ones; each time making them different.
Dress for success, her mantra is: “Trousers and jeans in every cut and style possible – flares, bell bottoms, skinnies…. I like a simple look with them – a white vest, Dolce & Gabbana snakeskin belt and of course, my high, high heels.” New York is her fashion hot spot. “The best place for fashion is New York. I pick up stuff from department stores, the Village, 5th Avenue and vintage stores. In fact, I picked up a vintage Chanel couture dress and some great pieces by Missoni, YSL and Diane von Furstenburg in vintage stores.” Her list of designers is however self exhausting– from Jeffrey and Bergdorf Goodman in New York to Bombay Electric and Ogaan in Mumbai. From Anna Sui to Sabyasachi, Comme des Garçons to Anuradha Vakil, from Karl Lagerfeld to Manish Arora”, the list of coveted designers is almost endless.
Sonam list of gurus are endless……….. “Sienna Miller for her style, Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman for their red carpet etiquettes, Keira Knightly and Dita von Teese for being what they are. Beyonce who’s managed to make an unconventional body type seem hot, Shobhaa De for her saris, my sister Rhea Kapoor and my mom. Rita Dhody and Karisma Kapoor for looking great in jeans and no make-up.” She is also highly influenced with old Hollywood and Bollywood when dressing was sensual, feminine, romantic and mysterious– the age of Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe.
Sonam’s favorite jeans are J&Company, Diesel and True Religion. The watches she own are Cartier, Breguet and Bvlgari. Perfumes are her weakness. She loves Christian Louboutins and Chanel shoes. sneakers by Stella McCartney for Adidas, and Nike; embroidered mojris from Lucknow too. Sonam splurges on big bags- Prada’s skin bag and fringe bag, a few Chanels, three Marc Jacobs including the quilted Stam bag are her favorites.
Kapoor believes her mother has a lot to do with her sense of style. “When we were kids, mom (Sunita Kapoor) used to be a full-fledged designer, supplying to stores like Glitterati and Ensemble in Mumbai. I would watch models like Nayonika and Aishwarya, before she became Miss World, come in for fittings and discuss outfits and international designers. I saw the kaarigars at their embroidery stations for hours together. I think that’s how my interest in garments grew,”
Who can believe that such a petite frame was once over 90 kilos (198 pounds). Today she is a hot favorite with the high editorial and though the covers of magazines she has graced and ramps she has walked on has outnumbered the films she has done, she has come a long way in just a little while she has been in the industry. She can be ethnic Indian and contemporary western, all in once. While industry insiders are betting on Kapoor to be the next trendsetter in Bollywood, those who know the actor well are hardly surprised.
